If Change Is Constant…

Why Do We Keep Avoiding It?

What Is Change?

Change, at its core, is the fundamental process of life—growth, transformation, and becoming something new. It’s an experience that carries neither positive nor negative connotations; it simply is. From our earliest inception to birth, adolescence to adulthood, we are in a perpetual state of change. Yet, despite its constant presence in our lives, affecting us in countless ways, we often resist it. So, I have to ask—why do we struggle with something so inevitable?

Embracing the Human Experience

Change is an inherent part of the human experience, and I believe at the core of our existence is the need to embrace our emotions. Not to avoid them, resist them, or react to them—but to subtly allow them. Change, like life itself, acts as a conduit, giving us access to the full spectrum of emotions. This range of feelings exists on a polarity scale, ebbing and flowing, but, never constant.

It’s not about labeling emotions as good or bad; they simply are. Life, in its perpetual balance, invites us to find harmony by allowing ourselves to experience everything—good, bad, and in-between. In doing so, we create an internal equilibrium, a state of balance that honors both the highs and lows of our journey.

Why Is Change Pivotal?

Change is how we grow as individuals. It allows us to try new things, learn, evolve, and transform throughout our lives. Without change, we remain stagnant, unable to progress or discover new aspects of ourselves and the world around us. It’s through change that we break free from the confines of familiarity and step into personal growth.

The Necessity of Change

Embracing change fully opens us to discovering what truly matters. Whether it’s nurturing a better relationship with ourselves and others or finding clarity in our career path, change pushes us to define and pursue what we truly desire. It empowers us to focus, gain clarity, and create positive transformations across various areas of our lives. The discomfort that often accompanies change is a sign of growth—a sign that we are expanding beyond our previous limits.

For example, last year I went through a significant change—I moved. How do I feel about moving? Honestly, it SUCKS! The process of packing, sorting, archiving, eliminating, and dealing with chaos before resetting everything is far from enjoyable. Yet, I’ve come to recognize that this discomfort is part of the transition, part of shedding the old to make room for the new. Moving, like any change, can feel overwhelming—until it doesn’t.

Experiencing Change Without Resistance

Change is an inherent part of life, and often, the emotions that arise with it can feel overwhelming or even unpleasant. But I’m learning not to force these emotions into something positive, nor judge them harshly. Instead, I allow them to simply be. Negative emotions don’t need to be fixed or altered—they’re meant to be experienced fully. Much like the process of moving, change can feel uncomfortable and chaotic—until suddenly, it doesn’t.

Change, even when it feels difficult, is essential to our growth. It’s through discomfort that we find the opportunity to evolve, shed old layers, and step into more authentic versions of ourselves. Instead of resisting change, we can embrace it—acknowledging that it’s not the change itself that’s hard, but our resistance to it.

Consider This

Change is not just a personal journey but a collective one. As individuals, when we embrace change, we contribute to the broader evolution of society. Our personal growth, adaptability, and resilience ripple outwards, influencing communities, organizations, and even cultural shifts. Change on a personal level can inspire change on a global scale, making it a powerful tool not just for individual transformation but for collective progress.

Are you resisting a change that could lead to your growth? Take a moment to reflect on the areas of your life where you might be holding back. Embrace the discomfort, lean into the process, and see where it takes you. If you’re ready to navigate change with intention and support, let’s connect and explore how we can work together to embrace the next chapter of your journey.
