Hence, I’ve chosen to label this period of my life as my reawakening, though it feels much like a homecoming. As March, my favorite month, approaches, it brings with it a sense of peculiar anticipation. This month, I celebrate my 50th birthday, a milestone that feels strange to articulate. It’s not accompanied by sadness or regret but a distinct feeling of strangeness. Contrary to what one might expect, I don’t feel 50; I feel a vibrant 33. My body doesn’t bear the expected weight of half a century; if anything, it shares my internal sense of being significantly younger.

Habits: Embracing the Milestone: Reflecting on Age and Identity

The saying goes, “Age is but a number,” yet its significance varies markedly throughout one’s life. As a teenager eager to drive, 15 feels like a restraint. At 18, you’re branded an adult, yet you’re barred from legal alcohol consumption. Then comes 40, a number that inexplicably plays mind games. But 50? It feels like just another number, albeit one I’m entirely at peace with. “Quality has no fear of time,” one of my life’s guiding mottos, seems more pertinent now than ever. If quality is measured by one’s fearlessness towards time, then I embody quality, for time has lost its grip on me.

However, the reawakening I allude to transcends the mere passage of time. It’s also about a profound shift in perspective—a realization that has been long in the making. This might be traced back to ancient societal structures established by patriarchal norms, which relegated women to a status inferior to men. These narratives have been perpetuated, partly by stories like Eve’s, which blame women for humanity’s fall from grace.

Societal, cultural, and traditional norms may unjustly pressure women to achieve perfection as a means of proving their worth in ways that are often subconscious. This isn’t about assigning blame but recognizing that men are subject to their own conditioning, albeit differently. It’s time for women to critically examine our pursuit of perfection and remember: you are inherently worthy, complete, and valuable, simply by being you.

You notice that there isn’t anything specifically that sets the day apart, in fact, it’s rather normal, and yet you find yourself smiling. You then set out to get your morning routine started and begin your day as scheduled.

What would it look like to you if you fell in love with your life? Would it feel less like a chore, a burden, or an obligation? Could it feel like a conscious decision, an action plan for your desired life, and more of an aligned journey? Could it feel more like the relationship you have with your favorite person?

Here is the essence of life: everything we want in life is a feeling. Every acquisition we desire, every goal we aim for, and every experience we seek is fundamentally about the feeling we anticipate on the other side of it.

So if it truly is that simple, what stops us from experiencing those feelings now, before our goals materialize? At the end of the day, I have a choice: do I wait to feel all those desired feelings until my goal actualizes, or do I feel all the feels as much as I can, all along the way, despite the lack of its actualization?

If what I want is the feeling, then I’m going to try and feel it now, not save it for later. But this raises a new question: how? The ‘how’ doesn’t intimidate me, especially when it comes to living life. Call me crazy, but I believe there isn’t just one way to live; there’s no right or wrong way. I believe there are a billion different ways, and we’re here to discover our own, not anyone else’s. This belief is incredibly freeing to me. Take this belief out for a spin, I am seeking to feel free in savoring small pleasures, rituals & routines, seeking beauty everywhere I look, and ultimately falling in love with the journey of life itself.
